Have you ever taken a considerable amount of time off?
…maybe it was a vacation or a holiday.
…maybe it was because of an injury or illness.
…or, perhaps, maybe something has just stalled in your business or in your life.
Well, if you’re experiencing anything like that, then watch the video below to help get yourself back into action mode!
If you’ve ever found yourself in the position where you have had to kick start momentum, then no doubt you understand how difficult it can be.Perhaps, you’re seeing this happening in your team. So, I want to share with you a very important way that you can get yourself back on track, whether you’re rebuilding or re-establishing momentum, or trying to build it from nothing. Now, this could be in your business or your life.
It could be a fitness slump or even a blip in your relationships. So, things were going great guns and something happened and all that fabulous momentum that you built up has gone!
Or maybe you’re just starting out, you’re in the very beginning stages of building your business and you are struggling to get that momentum going.
You’re saying…“Hey, I really want to get the results. I really want to start getting some momentum. I want to make some forward progress but I feel stuck.”Perhaps you’re living in one of those moments right now where you feel like things were going really well, you are getting there then, all of a sudden … puff … everything flattens out for you.
Hey, I know how you feel, I have been there,
Infact, I just recently came off an amazing family break.
My little boy is about to turn five and because we are emigrating soon we have a bucket list that we want to tick off before we leave the UK, and this break was all about making memories and having a great time as a family.
It was awesome.
It was a great vacation and something that we definitely needed.
But here’s the reality.Anytime you get yourself into a position where you take time off, there is that kick start phase, where you have to get yourself right back into it.Now the number one mistake that I see entrepreneurs make in this situation is that they don’t take any downtime in the first place!I can tell you from personal experience, that this constant hustle is not going to do much for your business in the long run.It probably feels great right now to have that significance and to have people say…“Wow, look how hard she works.”Until you get sick, or burn out or your productivity goes way down.
Instead of being obsessed with productivity, we should be obsessed with efficiency and effectiveness.
What can we do to be better at what we do?
The old saying is … “Work smarter not harder.”So don’t get me wrong, Personally, I love hard work. I thrive on it!
I think it’s exactly what we have to do as entrepreneurs but, there’s a massive difference between working hard and hustling. The fact of the matter is that you have to take downtime.
So make sure you schedule that in!Nowadays, we’re connected 24/7, there is very little downtime.
But you need the downtime and you need to unplug.
I can hear you saying!“That’s awesome, but Emma, what do we do when we have to get ourselves back on track?”
I’m going to share something with you that’s kind of cool, geeky, but kind of cool! Not many people know, but I grew up in a military household and I have always been fascinated with order, structure and the whole mindset that military personnel have.
So I want to share with you something that I read about a process used by US Naval Aviators.
It is called the stall recovery procedure.
Now regardless of which aircraft they are flying, they have to know this procedure off by heart in order to recover from a stall.
Which basically means that the aircraft stops lifting and it starts falling out of the sky.
A stall typically happens close to the ground, which means, they must act fast.So let me share with you really quickly what it is and then let me show you how it applies to you and your business. When an aircraft is in a stall, the pilots don’t necessarily feel a sense of falling as such, but they do start to feel a violent shake and the buzzer or alarms starts going off.
It gets their attention and they need to react immediately.
Now, I don’t have to tell you how dangerous this is.
But how they have to react might surprise you!
1. Add maximum power & point the nose of the craft down, instead of up!
Yep I crapped myself too when I read that!
You’re thinking to yourself…“So, you’re falling out of the sky, why on earth would you want to point the nose to the ground?”I’ll get to it in a second. So what has this got to do with your business, right?Well, in business and in life, if you take some time off, you might find yourself in a stall
The very first thing you need to do is recognize…“I’m in a stall.”
You might look at your finances or you might look at your waistline.
In your business, you might look at your metrics.
You might say to yourself … “Woah, we’ve really plateaued here.”
That’s important to recognize.
Does it mean that you have to stay there?
Absolutely not.
But the worst thing you can do in a stall in an aircraft, or a stall in your business, is to panic. The word PANIC simply stands for “Put Another Nail In the Coffin.”
If you panic in an airplane – you die.
If you panic in your business, your business is going to fail.
It’s one thing to say … “Hey, this sucks.”
It’s another thing to freak out, put yourself into a stress ball, and then, do nothing and stagnate.
That creates an even bigger stall in your business.
The first thing you need to do is: maximum power!
This doesn’t mean that you do everything all at once.
In fact, one of the biggest mistakes I see entrepreneurs make is to try to regain the momentum they lost all in one fell swoop. When I talk about going maximum power, what I’m talking about is getting up and doing what you know works.
Do something even if it may not be as effective as it used to be.
Maybe that means this is the time to do a Facebook live which you haven’t done in a while.
If you go on your Facebook live and you’re saying…“Well, jeez, I used to have 82 people show up to these things and now there’s only 2.”
Remember that that is better than the zero you had when you weren’t doing it at all!
What I’m talking about with maximum power in your business is the intention, the energy, the enthusiasm and the desire to want to be there.
Regaining momentum is not a walk in the park, it takes time and effort. One thing that I will tell you for free, is that losing momentum happens to absolutely everybody!
It doesn’t make you lazy,
it doesn’t make you foolish.
Now, there are ways to mitigate this which we’ll get to in a second, but what I want you to know is if you’re losing momentum, it’s normal.
You have to make time for your family.
You have to make time for yourself.
It cannot be, 24/7 power towards your business.
You’re going to have to give some time to other parts of your life. There are going to be times where you’re going to be extremely out of balance, where you’re going to work your tail off, and then, times when you’re not.
OK so back to our airplane scenario, we’ve gone max power and we’ve broken the stall, which means we’re going to actually drop the nose.
This seems totally backwards, right?
I can even hear you saying…“Well, Emma, you told me to go hard, and now, you’re telling me to drop the nose and fly toward the ground, that is just crazy dangerous.”What I’m talking about here is you doing a higher quality action, about committing to one or maybe two tasks that are your highest value task.
The income producing activities, the things that are going to increase your customer base or bring team members on to your team.
That’s the action that you want to take.Recovering from all these emails, trying to answer all these texts, trying to get yourself back to where you were on day one is ineffective.
It’s about saying…
What’s the one thing I can do right now today that’s going to get me back in the game?
Typically, that means re-engaging with your audience, re-engaging in your business, especially if you’re using attraction marketing.
You know attraction marketing is not about hiding behind a laptop.
If you want to hide behind a laptop, this is not going to work for you.
If you want to kick ass, make great money, and make an impact in the world, then attraction marketing is the way to do it.
If you don’t want to go chasing random strangers or spamming your friends and family, then attraction marketing is your formula.
But here’s the thing.
It requires that you be effective with your time and your efforts.
That’s what I’m talking about. You’re going to have to balance things out just a little bit which means if you have a considerable amount of time off, now you’re going to have to sacrifice and put a little more time back into the work.
If you’ve taken two or three weeks off from the gym, that means, you’re going to have to put the chocolate and cake away for a while.
Rededicate yourself to your fitness regime or rededicate yourself to your business regime. That’s what I’m talking about by levelling your wings.
2. Next they put their wing flaps to approach!
In the case of your business, this means you’re going to have to reach out for some support.
When I first came back off my break, the first thing I did was schedule a call with my mentor Helen in Australia. We had a conversation about how we could support each other and put together a game plan for moving forward. To get yourself back into go-mode, you’re going to have to reach out and ask for support.
It’s just the way it is.
Don’t fear asking for help!
It doesn’t mean you’re weak. It doesn’t mean you’re incapable.
It makes you a strong leader and it shows that you care. It also shows that you value the people around you. You value their abilities. You might say to your family, your spouse, your partner, your roommate, whatever your situation is…“Listen, I’ve taken two weeks off working out and I’m starting to feel sluggish. What I need is your support and your accountability. Do not let me backslide into the cake, chocolate, wine, beer etc. I need two weeks to get myself back on track please can you help and support me.”
That’s the kind of stuff, my friends, that will help lift you up in your business.
If you need to get on your Facebook Live and you’re saying…“Hey, that door’s got to be shut. I need quiet for a while.”
That’s the kind of thing you must communicate to the people around you.
It doesn’t matter that you’ve taken downtime.
It doesn’t matter that you’ve had stagnation in your results.
Stop obsessing over that.
Be more obsessed with what you’re doing and how you’re doing it.
Here’s the next part of this procedure.
Once you have your flaps down…
3. Lift your gear up!
In a stall, you need to push up.
You need to bring your landing gear up because typically, a stall happens when you’re on approach to come in for a landing.
If you’ve got the landing gear down, that creates drag.
In your business or in your life, there’s something that is typically creating drag for you.Let’s put it in the context of diet and fitness.
If you’ve been eating the yummy food or if you’ve been indulging in a certain area, that’s the stuff you want to get rid of.
That’s the drag that’s bringing you down.
When you bring the gear up in an aircraft, that creates a reduction in drag which makes the aircraft more efficient.
So have a look at what is slowing you down from creating that forward momentum in your business?
What are those things that might be preventing you from creating that lift that you need to fly in your business? As you’re bringing the gear up, the next thing you want to do is to establish a positive rate of climb.
What do I mean by this?
This doesn’t mean that once the aircraft’s out of a stall, you put the nose straight up and try to climb for the stars.
That’s foolish.
That’s a great way to put yourself back in a stall.
All of a sudden, you find yourself in a spin and that could be extremely dangerous. When you’re trying to get yourself back on track with your business, it’s important not to try to regain all of that progress that you had before, right away.
You can come on too aggressive and push away clients
You can come off sounding desperate.
You can sound like somebody who doesn’t really act like a professional.
Suddenly, you may have created a little bit of damage to your reputation in business or perhaps even lost a sale that was about to happen. The idea here is to start to climb slowly and steadily.
You pick up pace.
You pick up momentum.
It happens over time.
Give yourself the opportunity to slowly rebuild that momentum on your terms. Some people can pick up really fast after time away.
They come back from a vacation or a holiday and can just hit the gas and they’re back on track and that’s awesome.
Other people, need a little bit more time to get ramped up.
The idea here is not to make excuses
The idea is not to extend the stall.
Be quick.
Be efficient, be precise when it comes to getting yourself back on track. The whole point is this – be consistent.
If you’ve lost that consistency because you took time off, don’t sweat it.
Just re-establish the consistency by showing up.
It’s so simple.
I’m not saying it’s easy.
It’s not easy, but it’s pretty straightforward.
If you’re in a position right now where you’ve taken time off and you’re saying to yourself, listen,
I’ve got so much going on.
I’ve got to try to re-establish my momentum.
I’ve got to get it all back because I took this time off and you start feeling the guilt.
You start feeling regret for taking time off
That is not the point. The point was to relax, recharge, and get yourself back even better than you were before.
What that doesn’t mean is that you have to be foot to the floor, on full speed on day one.
The idea is to recognize…“Hey, I stalled.”
But I’m going to do whatever it takes to get out of the stall.
I’m going to focus on the important things first.
I’m going to put a little bit more work in.
I’m going to add full power on this which means I’m going to give everything I got to my best quality of effort, not quantity of effort.
I’m going to get rid of the drag.
I’m going to stop putting things in my own way.
I’m going to say no to the things that have been distracting me, the shiny objects that have been holding me back.
I’m only going to focus on those actions and those activities that are actually going to build the momentum in my business, put the money in the bank and, more importantly, get myself back on track. Here’s the reality.
You’re not behind.
You’re exactly where you’re supposed to be.
You took the break you needed.
Maybe it was to recover physically.
Maybe it was to recover mentally.
Maybe it was just because, hey, I needed the time off and I decided I wanted to take it. That is one of the reasons why we work for ourselves, right? To have time freedom. The question is, what are you going to do next?
What do you have to do to get back on track to where you once were?
What’s the one thing you can do right now today to get yourself back in the forward momentum?
The point is you don’t have to do it all at once.
Stop putting that pressure and stress on yourself. So that is pretty much where I have been recently, the break was amazing, no guilt, no regretsNow, it’s just time to do the work.Your bounce back period is going to be much shorter.
